George Eliot
Finished. Finally.

It isn't as though I hated it. It got better toward the end but it never got really good. I should have trusted my earlier instinct about it. Finishing it seemed like a chore and that is not why I read.

One quote I enjoyed -
But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.
Amen to that. And Amen to Middlemarch!

  1. I'm so late on commenting on this. I'm so sorry you didn't like this one. I haven't read it but my expectations were a bit high. This review should temper them a bit so I won't be too let down if it's not for me. Glad it's over. Reading a book that feels like a chore is no fun!
